With a smaller steel shot, the surface will be smoother and more polished. A larger steel shot blast media will generate a rougher surface, but cleaning will be more vigorous. Wheel blast systems and air-powered systems can both be utilized to propel steel shot onto the surface of the part. Steel shot media can be recycled more than hundreds of times before needing to be replaced because of its hardness and density. A very small amount of dust is produced during the blasting process when steel shot is used.
